Our mission
Hewanorra Health Volunteers (HHV) is a nonprofit organization whose purpose is to mobilize professional and financial resources to support the delivery of health care at St. Jude Hospital in Vieux Fort, St. Lucia.
HHV's status as a 501(c)(3) public charity was confirmed in November, 2006. This enables our supporters to make tax-deductible contributions of money and materials to benefit St. Jude Hospital.
Our partner: St. Jude Hospital
St. Jude Hospital is the primary health care provider serving families who live in the southern part of St. Lucia.
Built by the U.S. government for use during World War II, the facility grew to become an 88-bed hospital with inpatient and outpatient services, specialty care, maternity ward, emergency department and surgical services.
Many of these services are provided by an international community of volunteers, who work alongside permanent staff. Volunteers come from all walks of life and many religious traditions. All share a common desire to use their time and talents in service to others.
Our contributions
HHV was established in 2006 by a group of volunteers who wanted to expand our commitment to St. Jude Hospital and the people of St. Lucia. Our contributions and collaborations have made an impact:
Diabetes testing supplies
Shipment of medical supplies from MedShare International, valued at more than $75K
Shipment of two maternity beds for the new maternity ward
TB testing for St. Jude staff
Name badges for St. Jude staff
Shipment of medical supplies from Project Cure, valued at more than $100K
Support the Volunteer Program by working with hospital leadership to identify needs, recruiting volunteers, and supplementing the orientation information provided by the St. Jude administration.
Pursue fundraising and in-kind donations from individuals and organizations.
Allocate funds to projects requested by the St. Jude administration. The current focus is helping to pay the shipping costs associated with the overseas transport of donated medical supplies and equipment.
Patients are benefitting from speedier, safer emergency treatment thanks to a new St. Jude ambulance.
Filled with $75K worth of donated medical equipment and supplies, the vehicle was the result of a successful collaboration between HHV and several organizations:
Mayville Lutheran Church (ND)
Rotary Club of East Bremerton (WA)
Rotary Club of Silverdale Sunrise (WA)
Upstate Emergency Medicine (NY)
